Stegnopsis was named by Whittington (1965) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u O Llvi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 795]. Its type is Stegnopsis solitarius.

It was assigned to Asaphidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002).
