Graculus idahensis was named by Marsh (1870) [The most specific collection information is that the type specimen is from the Tertiary of Idaho.]. It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Phalacrocorax idahensis by Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1933), Wetmore (1940), Brodkorb (1955), Wetmore (1956), Murray (1970), Emslie (1998).
