Esoces was named by Cuvier (1817). It is extant.
It was synonymized subjectively with Luciidae by Hay (1902); it was corrected as Esocidae by Woodward (1901), Rapp (1946), Jordan (1963), Wilson (1967), Shoshani et al. (1989), Constantin (1999), Peng et al. (2001), Betancur et al. (2013), Nelson et al. (2016).
It was assigned to Actinopterygii by Woodward (1901); to Haplomi by Rapp (1946), Jordan (1963); to Osteichthyes by Wilson (1967); to Clupeiformes by Shoshani et al. (1989); to Esocoidea by Constantin (1999), Peng et al. (2001); and to Esociformes by Betancur et al. (2013), Nelson et al. (2016).
