Australosutura was named by Campbell and Goldring (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l in Amos et al. ].

It was assigned to Brachymetopinae by Owens and Hammann (1990); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Brachymetopidae by Brezinski (1998) and Jell and Adrain (2003).
