Taxonomy
Bolbocephalus was named by Whitfield (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l]. Its type is Bathyurus seelyi.

It was assigned to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); to Bathyuridae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Bathyurinae by Loch (2007), Fortey and Bruton (2013).
