Buchiproetus was named by Pillet (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l D Eife Sepkoski's reference number: 1106]. Its type is Proetus buchi.

It was assigned to Proetidae by Pillet (1969); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); to Tropidocoryphidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Cornuproetinae by Chlupac (1994), Bault et al. (2021).
