Pentatrematites granulatus was named by Romer (1851). It is the type species of Granatocrinus.
It was recombined as Elaeacrinus granulatus by Shumard (1866); it was recombined as Orbitremites granulatus by Wood (1909); it was recombined as Granatocrinus granulatus by Fay (1961), Waters and Bell (1986).
