Longiproetus was named by Cavet and Pillet (1958) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife-u D Give-u Sepkoski's reference number: 933]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Proetus (Longiproetus) by Ormiston (1967); it was reranked as Gerastos (Longiproetus) by Chlupac (1992).

It was assigned to Proetus by Ormiston (1967); to Gerastos by Chlupac (1992); to Proetinae by Feist and Petersen (1995); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Proetidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
