Proetus (Neoproetus) was named by Tesch (1923). It is not extant. Its type is Neoproetus indicus.

It was reranked as Neoproetus by Jell and Adrain (2002), Sepkoski (2002) and Owens (2003).

It was assigned to Proetus by Tesch (1923); to Proetidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Bollandiinae by Owens (2003).
