Otarionella was named by Weyber (1965) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi D Eife-u Sepkoski's reference number: 421]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Otarion (Otarionella) by Alberti (1969); it was synonymized subjectively with Otarion by Jell and Adrain (2002).

It was assigned to Otarion by Alberti (1969); to Aulacopleurinae by Thomas and Owens (1978); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Otarioninae by Bault et al. (2021).
