Prionopeltis was named by Hawle and Corda (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: S Prid D Gedi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1106].

It was assigned to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); to Tropidocoryphidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Drevermanniinae by Bault et al. (2021).
