Taxonomy

Winterbergia was named by Hahn and Brauckmann (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 895]. It is not extant. Its type is Carbonocoryphe hercynica.

It was reranked as Carbonocoryphe (Winterbergia) by Hahn et al. (1996), Vanderlaan and Ebach (2015).

It was assigned to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); to Proetidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); to Carbonocoryphe by Hahn et al. (1996), Vanderlaan and Ebach (2015); and to Weaniinae by Müller and Hahn (2019).

Synonyms

Winterbergia elegans was named by Engel and Morris (1989). Its type specimen is AMF80733, a cephalon/head, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is NU L1049. Malchi Creek, Malchi, near Gracemere, which is in a Tournaisian marine mudstone/limestone in the Malchi Creek Formation of Australia.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Vanderlaan and Ebach (2015).
Winterbergia keepitensis was named by Engel and Morris (1989). Its type specimen is AMF80743, a pygidium, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is NU L1054. Creek on the west bank of Lake Keepit, near Manilla, which is in a Tournaisian marine mudstone/siltstone in the Namoi Formation of Australia.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Vanderlaan and Ebach (2015).
