Crotalocephalus was named by Salter (1853) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi D Give-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2,1106]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Cheirurus (Crotalocephalus) by Philip (1962).

It was assigned to Cheirurus by Philip (1962); to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cheiruridae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
