Eccoptochile was named by Hawle and Corda (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u O Ashg Sepkoski's reference number: 1266]. Its type is Eccoptochile claviger.

It was reranked as Cheirurus (Eccoptochile) by Salter (1864).

It was assigned to Cheirurus by Salter (1864); to Eccoptochilinae by Zhou et al. (1998); to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cheiruridae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
