Taxonomy
Maastrichtidelphys meurismeti was named by Martin et al. (2005). Its type specimen is NHMM2002 063, a tooth (Right M2), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is ENCI-Maastricht B.V. quarry, Valkenburg Member, which is in a Maastrichtian coastal horizon in the Maastricht Formation of Belgium. It is the type species of Maastrichtidelphys.

Martin et al. 2005Smallest known didelphoid, characterized by labiolingually compressed stylar cusps, significant reduction of stylar cusp B, marginal position of stylar cusp C, stylar cusp C is the largest stylar cusp, reduction of the size of conules and absence or extreme reduction of internal “wings” on para- and metaconules, invasive V shaped centrocrista with the apex capped by an arcuate conule or ridge.
