Taxonomy
Pterygometopus was named by Schmidt (1881). Its type is Calymene sclerops.

It was reranked as Dalmanites (Pterygometopus) by Schuchert (1900).

It was assigned to Dalmanites by Schuchert (1900); to Pterygometopinae by Warburg (1925), Jaanusson and Ramsköld (1993); to Pterygometopidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002).
