Macrourites propinquus was named by Schlotheim (1822). It is not extant. It is the type species of Cycleryon.
It was recombined as Cycleryon propinquus by Garassino and Schweigert (2006), Schweitzer et al. (2009), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Charbonnier and Garassino (2012), Feldmann et al. (2013), Odin et al. (2019).
