Protomunida pentacantha was named by Muller and Collins (1991). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Szepvolgy Limestory Facies 4, which is in a Paleogene marine limestone in Hungary.
It was recombined as Eumunida pentacantha by de Angeli and Garassino (2002), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and De Angeli and Ceccon (2012).
