Pyraustocranium was named by Ross (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-u Sepkoski's reference number: 795]. Its type is Pyraustocranium orbatum.

It was assigned to Telephinidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Trilobita by Sepkoski (2002).
