Homolopsis dawsonensis was named by G. A. Bishop (1973). It is the type species of Homolopsis.
It was recombined as Dioratiopus dawsonensis by Schweitzer et al. (2010); it was recombined as Vespridromites dawsonensis by Schweitzer and Feldmann (2011).
