Gonatocaris was named by Guerich (1929) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl-l]. It is the type genus of Gonatocarididae.
It was assigned to Ceratiocarididae by Brooks et al. (1969); to Archaeostraca by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gonatocarididae by Liu et al. (2024).
