Tyrannophontes was named by Schram (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: C Serp-l C Step-l]. It is not extant. Its type is Tyrannophontes theridion. It is the type genus of Tyrannophontidae.
It was assigned to Stomatopoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Tyrannophontidae by Schram (1969), Schram (2010).
