Acantholambrus was named by Blow and Manning (1996) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1259]. Its type is Acantholambrus baumi.

It was assigned to Parthenopidae by Blow and Manning (1996); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Parthenopinae by Feldmann et al. (1998), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Schweitzer et al. (2020).
