Cymonomus was named by Milne-Edwards (1880). It is extant. It is the type genus of Cymonomidae.

It was assigned to Cymonomidae by Muller and Collins (1991), Ng et al. (2009), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Schweitzer et al. (2017).
