Archaeocarabus was named by M'Coy (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l]. Its type is Archaeocarabus bowerbanki.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Palinuridae by Rathbun (1935), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Schweitzer et al. (2015).
