Calappella was named by Rathbun (1918) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol]. Its type is Calappella quadrispina.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Calappidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Luque et al. (2017) and Schweitzer and Feldmann (2019).
