Taxonomy
Carcineretes was named by Withers (1922) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 961]. It is not extant. Its type is Carcineretes woolacotti. It is the type genus of Carcineretidae.

It was assigned to Heterotremata by Vega et al. (1995); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Carcineretidae by Schweitzer et al. (2003), Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006), Karasawa et al. (2008), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Luque et al. (2017) and Schweitzer et al. (2021).
