Carpopenaeus was named by Glaessner (1945). It is the type genus of Carpopenaeidae.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Carpopenaeidae by Glaessner (1945), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Schweitzer et al. (2023), Charbonnier (2025).
