Goneplax was named by Leach (1814) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Goneplacidae, Goneplacoidea.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Desmarest (1822), Sepkoski (2002); to Goneplacinae by Karasawa and Kato (2003), Garassino et al. (2004); and to Goneplacidae by Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Schweitzer et al. (2022).
