Goniochele was named by Bell (1858) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l T Ol-l]. It is the type genus of Goniochelidae.
It was assigned to Brachyura by Woodward (1877); to Dromiidae by Rathbun (1918); to Necrocarcinidae by Collins (2002); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Orithopsidae by Schweitzer et al. (2003), Schweitzer et al. (2010); and to Goniochelidae by Schweitzer and Feldmann (2011), Luque et al. (2017), Schweitzer et al. (2021).
