Portufuria was named by Collins et al. (2005). Its type is Portufuria enigmatica.
It was assigned to Portunidae by Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006); to Macropipidae by Karasawa et al. (2008), Schweitzer et al. (2010); and to Polybiinae by Schweitzer et al. (2021).
