Heeia was named by Wright and Collins (1972) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Prosopon villersensis.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Latreilliidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010); and to Viaiidae by Schweitzer et al. (2012), Artal et al. (2012).
