Hepatinulus was named by Ristori (1886) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi T Plio]. Its type is Hepatinulus seguentiae.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Leucosiidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010); and to Leucosioidea by Karasawa et al. (2019).
