Hillius was named by Bishop (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 961]. Its type is Hillius youngi. It was considered monophyletic by Bishop (1983).

It was assigned to Dorippinae by Bishop (1983); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Dorippidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010); and to Cyclodorippinae by Schweitzer et al. (2017).
