Homelys was named by Von Meyer (1844) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u]. It is not extant. Its type is Homelys minor.

It was assigned to Palaemonidae by Glaessner (1969); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002) and Schweitzer et al. (2010); to Caridea by Schweitzer et al. (2023); and to Penaeoidea by Schweitzer et al. (2023).
