Pirimela was named by Leach (1816). It is extant. It is the type genus of Pirimelidae.
It was assigned to Cancrinae by Dana (1851); to Pirimelidae by Müller (1984), Schweitzer et al. (2010); and to Pirimelinae by Schweitzer et al. (2021).
