Santeella was named by Blow and Manning (1996). Its type is Santeella lillyae.
It was assigned to Xanthoidea by Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006); to Pilumnidae by Beschin et al. (2015); and to Eumedoninae by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Luque et al. (2017), Schweitzer et al. (2022).
