Macrocheira was named by De Haan (1839) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R]. It is extant. Its type is Maja kaempferi. It is the type genus of Macrocheiridae.
It was assigned to Inachinae by Karasawa (1993), Schweitzer and Feldmann (1999), Schweitzer (2001); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Inachidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Nyborg et al. (2016), Schweitzer et al. (2020); and to Macrocheiridae by Ferratges et al. (2023), Schweitzer (2025).
