Matutites was named by Blow and Manning (1996) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1259]. Its type is Matutites anthonyae.

It was assigned to Matutinae by Blow and Manning (1996); to Calappidae by Feldmann et al. (1998); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Matutidae by Karasawa et al. (2019) and Feldmann et al. (2019); and to Aethridae by Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Lima et al. (2023).
