Pilodius mediterraneus was named by Lörenthey (1898). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Budapest Region, Hungary, which is in an Oligocene offshore claystone/sandstone in Hungary.
It was recombined as Pilumnus mediterraneus by Müller (1974), Schweitzer et al. (2010).
