Gecarcinidae was named by MacLeay (1838). It is extant. Its type is Gecarcinus.

It was assigned to Brachyrhyncha by Rathbun (1918); and to Grapsoidea by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Luque et al. (2017) and Schweitzer et al. (2023).
