Paragalathea was named by Via Boada (1981) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1225]. It is not extant. Its type is Paragalathea multisquamata. It is the type genus of Paragalatheidae.
It was reranked as Galathea (Paragalathea) by Patrulius (1966), Muţiu and Bădăluţă (1971).
