Paragalathea was named by Patrulius (1959) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1225]. It is not extant. Its type is Galathea verrucosa. It is the type genus of Paragalatheidae.
It was reranked as Galathea (Paragalathea) by Patrulius (1966) and Muţiu and Bădăluţă (1971).
