Persephona was named by Leach (1817) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Leucosiidae by Rathbun (1919), Rathbun (1926); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Philyrinae by Todd and Collins (2005); and to Ebaliinae by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Luque et al. (2017), Karasawa et al. (2019).
