Pleolobites was named by Remy (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: T Pale T Eo]. It is not extant. Its type is Pleolobites erinaceus.

It was assigned to Carcininae by Glaessner (1969); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Portunidae by Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006); to Macropipidae by Karasawa et al. (2008), Schweitzer et al. (2010); to Polybiinae by Schweitzer et al. (2021); and to Portunoidea by Ossó et al. (2022).
