Porcellana was named by Lamarck (1801) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Porcellanidae.

It was assigned to Porcellanidea by Stimpson (1862); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Porcellanidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Osawa and McLaughlin (2010), De Angeli and Ceccon (2017), Beschin et al. (2018), Schweitzer et al. (2023).
