Prosopon was named by von Meyer (1835) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo K Nc Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Prosopidae.
It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Prosopidae by Schweitzer and Feldmann (2009), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Schweitzer et al. (2012), van Bakel et al. (2021), Schweitzer and Feldmann (2024).
