Tepexicarcinus was named by Feldmann et al. (1998) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-m]. It is the type genus of Tepexicarcinidae.
It was assigned to Homolidae by Sepkoski (2002); to Dorippidae by Feldmann et al. (1998), Schweitzer et al. (2010); to Tepexicarcinidae by Luque (2015), Luque et al. (2017); and to Telamonocarcinidae by Schweitzer et al. (2021).
