Upogebia was named by Leach (1814) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith-l R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Upogebiidae.
It was assigned to Callianassidae by Rathbun (1926), Feldmann and Keys (1992); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Upogebiidae by Müller (1984), Karasawa (1993), Feldmann et al. (2008), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Schweitzer et al. (2023).
