Metabuprestium vitimense was named by Alexeev (1996). Its type specimen is PIN 3064/7129, an elytra, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Baissa (PIN collection 3064, bed 2), which is in an Aptian lacustrine - large marl/siltstone in the Zaza Formation of the Russian Federation.
