Xanthosia americana was named by Rathbun (1930). Its type specimen is USNM 371098, a carapace, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Maeandricampus americanus by Schweitzer et al. (2012), Luque et al. (2017) and Feldmann et al. (2018).
